3 More Ways to Protect Your Hardwood Flooring This Spring

Part of keeping your house clean involves taking the time to clean your hardwood flooring.

Part of keeping your house clean involves taking the time to clean your hardwood flooring. This involves moving rugs aside and shifting the furniture so that it doesn’t get in the way. You will also probably need to have your kids and pets play outside so that they don’t slow down the process, either. Here are some more ways you can protect your hardwood flooring this spring.

Sweep and Vacuum

Dirt, dust, and other debris can collect on your hardwood floors. While they might not be as visible as the grime that accumulates on the tile floors in your kitchens and bathrooms, that doesn’t mean they aren’t there. Grab a broom and sweep the floors once a week. Once you have finished cleaning, it’s time to warm up the vacuum and take it for a spin around your home. Many vacuum models have a setting specifically for hardwood floors so that the spinning rotors that help to suck up dust won’t leave scratches, dings, or gouges in your hardwood floors but can still maneuver.

Don’t Buff or Steam

The next step is to avoid buffing or steaming the hardwood floors in your home. Hardwood flooring is vulnerable to water damage, even if it is caused by moisture or steam. That’s why you should steer clear of buffing machines and steam mops. If you do, then your hardwood flooring will thank you. While these methods might work on other flooring types, it’s best to play it safe and do whatever you can to avoid damaging your valuable and beautiful hardwood floors.

Get a Leg Up

Finally, be careful when you move furniture around. If it is something heavy or bulky, have someone help you move it. That way, you can avoid dropping the furniture on the floor and leaving a dent that can’t be easily covered up or removed. Try using felt pads by putting them under the legs of all the furniture that you plan to have on your hardwood flooring. When you do, the furniture won’t leave unsightly scratches behind, no matter how heavy and hard to move it is. You’ll have more energy to rearrange the room in other ways once you’re done, and you can continue to enjoy the look and feel of your hardwood flooring.
