Take a minute to think about the floors beneath your feet. You probably don’t do this until it’s time to clean them. Even though your home might be full of carpet, chances are there is hardwood flooring underneath it. One way to transform your home this fall is to get rid of the carpet and expose the hardwood hiding under it. Here are some tips for getting the carpet glue off your hardwood floors.
Start by Dusting
So let’s say that you successfully removed the carpeting. The first thing you need to do after that is to dust your hardwood floors. By getting rid of the dust, you will be able to find the patches of glue still stuck on the floor. You can also prevent new stains from soaking into your floors and ruining how they look. Once you’ve finished dusting, grab a putty knife and work on the glue that you can see. Loose glue clumps can be scraped away more easily than the glue that is stuck on more permanently.
Remove the Glue
Ask your hardwood flooring partner what you should do about removing the glue that’s too tough to scrape off. Some solutions are far better for your hardwood floors, compared to if you have vinyl, tile, or laminate floors. Do your research on manufacturers and found out what they recommend.
Once you have found the product you want to use, rub it onto the glue using a paintbrush. Eventually, it will become soft and sticky. At this point, you can use the putty knife to get rid of the glue that used to be too rigid to touch. Keep your putty knife close at hand though, because if you try to use more conventional knives, such as a kitchen knife, you might leave deep scratches on your floors that you won’t be able to undo.
Remove the Residue
Getting rid of glue residue on your hardwood floors involves using an adhesive remover. You can also use this on the items around your home that might have been affected. This way, you can make sure your hardwood floors are as bright and beautiful as possible. Just make sure you do this during the daytime so you can see better. Also, throw open the windows, so there’s enough ventilation to clear out the smell from using the solution.
