6 Tips for Keeping Your Hardwood Floors Safe During a Move

6 Tips for Keeping Your Hardwood Floors Safe During a Move

May is a great time to both buy a new home and start the moving process. But whether you’re moving out of your old apartment and into a new townhouse, you need to keep your hardwood floors safe.

May is a great time to both buy a new home and start the moving process. But whether you’re moving out of your old apartment and into a new townhouse, you need to keep your hardwood floors safe. Here’s what you can do.

Use Blankets

It can be tempting to use your blankets to build a blanket fort during the process of moving. After all, whether you are moving in or moving out, it’s still a stressful endeavor that will make you want to blow off some steam. That said, the blankets will be more useful protecting your hardwood floors while you attempt to heave furniture out of the way and pick up your expensive electronics and take them someplace else. You can use the blankets on your bed, or borrow some from a friend – but either way, be sure to use them.

Resist Sliding

Another way to have some fun while moving is to slide boxes and containers along the floor. You’ve slid around on your socks or bare feet before, so you figured that doing this couldn’t hurt. However, when you do this, you might leave unsightly streaks on your hardwood floors instead.

Try Felt Pads

Felt pads are another great idea, especially for the legs of furniture such as tables, chairs, and sofas. By using these pads, you can reduce the risk of denting your hardwood floors. You don’t even need to throw anything on the floor to leave a lasting dent – it can happen even after a badly-timed drop.

Don’t Drop Anything

Dropping your boxes and containers can cause irreparable damage to what you’re moving. It can also ruin your hardwood floors. The heavier something is, the more likely it is to damage your floors, so be as careful as possible.

Wipe Your Feet

Taking your shoes off every time you come in and go out seems impractical given the circumstances. Still, the weather isn’t always guaranteed to be beautiful on the day you need to start or finish packing and moving. Even if you are only moving down the street by about two hundred feet, you should still take a moment to wipe your feet and leave your hardwood floors as clean as possible.

Clean Up

This tip is more applicable for when you are moving in and not on your way out. Getting rid of any small debris that you might not notice right away is a good policy to keep. That way, you can prevent any accidental scratches that might chip away at your security deposit.
