Can you use hardwood flooring in basements?

Can you ever use hardwood flooring in basements? The look of hardwood flooring is catching on in popularity. While it’s common to to see hardwood flooring in living rooms, kitchens, or by the front door, they are are in basements. Why is that? Let’s find out in this edition of the blog.

Hardwood Flooring in Basements

It is actually possible to use hardwood flooring in basements. You’ll want to be sure they are dry basements, to reduce the risk of moisture damage. Humidity levels are a possible risk, so be mindful of that. Expert opinion however, has led to to the strong belief that engineered hardwood is a solid option. Consider using engineered hardwood flooring in your basement, instead. Since engineered hardwood is built with multiple layers of wood in a perpendicular pattern, they hold up better. One of the best properties of engineered hardwood is that it is more resistant than traditional hardwood. Traditional hardwood is, after all, generally built with one layer of wood. Damage such as warping can affect single-layer wood more heavily than multi-layer wood.

Laminate Flooring in Basements

Due to their uncanny resemblance to regular wood, laminate flooring has gained popularity as well. Images of wood grain are pressed onto fiberboard that has been compressed and given a clear-finish coating. High-quality laminate flooring is much easier to clean.

Unlike more traditional hardwood, they tend to be more resistant against scratches. For basement installation, laminate flooring is usually given an extra layer, known as a “vapor layer”. The vapor layer uses plastic or a similar material as an additional shield against moisture.

Carpet Flooring in Basements

While carpet flooring makes basements feel more comfortable, the drawback is that they are even more vulnerable to moisture damage. Carpet will need to be replaced if it gets too soaked. Small areas of carpet are easier and less expensive to replace than the whole thing, however.
