Few homeowners can do everything around the house. No matter what else is on your honey-do list, caring for your hardwood floors is easier than it seems. Even so, if you are hesitant to do anything for fear of damaging your floors, then it is probably best for you to get in touch with flooring experts who can handle it for you. In the meantime, here are some tips for caring for your new hardwood floors.

Keep Them Dry Enough

For one thing, you must make sure your hardwood floors are dry but not too dry. Although it may seem like a paradox, if your floors are too dry, they are likely to suffer more cracking and warping problems. During the wintertime, you will probably need to use more humidifiers and diffusers to help you breathe easier. However, the vapor generated by these appliances can leave unintentional moisture damage behind.

Try Other Mopping Solutions

Keeping your floors clean goes a long way towards preserving them. The longer they last, the better you will feel about your investment. What this means is that you should be more careful as you attempt to mop them. Rugs and mats can help protect each floorboard against mud and other sources of staining, such as persistent water spots. A rubber lattice mat can help keep these features in place. There are also cleaning sprays that specifically formulated for hardwood floor care, as well. Make sure you don’t use soap-based or wax-based detergents since they will turn the finish cloudy instead of restoring its shine.

Be Gentle on Them

One solution to the mopping dilemma is to use a vacuum. Vacuums are useful for cleaning dust and other types of debris on carpets and rugs, but it is tricky to do the same on hardwood surfaces without scratching, denting, or gouging them. Steam cleaners may also sound like an option, but be wary of moisture damage.

Try Polishing It

Getting that beautiful sheen back, especially on worn-out floors, calls for some clever polishing techniques. Move furniture out of the way, clean the floors, and apply the polish. Give the polish some time to set. Again, if you feel uncomfortable doing this, then it is time to contact the experts, especially if you want to refinish your floors instead!
