Hardwood floors are a thing of lasting beauty. But over time, and if they haven’t been cared for, they can lose some of their glory. There are a variety of treatment options for making your hardwood floors look new again, one of the less expensive and quick options is recoating. As it is easier, faster, and less expensive than refinishing, it can be an excellent option for many.
How Often Should You Recoat?
Depending on a variety of factors, including the average wear on your floors, you can go anywhere from two to ten years between recoating your floors. The floor will not need to be recoated annually, only once significant signs of wear begin to show. When you do need to recoat your flooring, you will not need to sand it first thoroughly, just a light screening will be required.
Can I Recoat My Floor?
Depending on the condition of your hardwood floor and the way you’ve treated it, recoating may not work for you. If you have used certain types of cleaners and polishes, it can cause the coating not to adhere correctly, meaning it won’t be effective. If this is the case, you can simply clean with a vinegar and water solution to remove the residue or use an approved cleaner from your coaters company.
Will Recoating Work On My Floor?
In older homes, it is common to find that the original hardwood floor was covered up with carpet or other flooring types. If you are one of the lucky homeowners to pull up the flooring to find hardwood, recoating may not be the best option. Old flooring finishes often involved a waxy buildup and glues that will cause a recoating solution to not bond correctly. A complete sanding is often needed to make previously carpeted floors look new again.
