Hardwood Floor Maintenance Tips
- Dried Food: If you find dried good caked onto your hardwood floor, grab a sharpened knife and scrape up the food, working from the outer edge to the middle. Next, rub the damaged surface with a dampened cloth and then dry the area with a dry cloth. You may need to re-wax and buff the surface.
- Crayon: If you have a young child, odds are that there are crayon marks around your home. If you find any on your hardwood floors, do not panic. Grab a damp cloth and use a mild dishwashing detergent to remove the crayon.
- Chewing Gum: Talk about a sticky situation. You will first need to apply a wood floor cleaning product and let it permeate the spill to loosen. Next, scrape off the gum using a plastic spatula. If you do not have a wood floor cleaning product available, you can apply ice to the gum until it becomes brittle. Then use the spatula to scrape the gum away.
- Oil and Grease: To remove oil and grease, first apply mineral spirits or TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) and wipe with a clean cloth.
Eventually, no matter how hard you work to keep your floors clean, your once beautiful hardwood floor will not look so beautiful. Over the years, normal wear and tear takes its toll. Fortunately, this does not mean you need new floors. Unlike carpet and linoleum, hardwood floors can be refinished, giving your old floor brand new life.
