Sanding your hardwood floors is a wonderful way to restore their looks, while also raising their durability and longevity. With that said, there are ways to mess up the sanding process that can harm the look and condition of your flooring. Today, we’ll be sharing mistakes that can be made during hardwood floor sanding so you know how to avoid them.
Using Sandpaper With the Wrong Grit
Depending on where you are in the sanding process, the grit of your sandpaper should vary. In the early stages of hardwood floor sanding, you want to start with coarser sandpaper so you can remove the old finish more easily. As sanding gets to its final phases, you should switch over to finer grits to ensure that the surface of your floor ends up even and smooth.
Not Doing Enough Sanding
When sanding your hardwood floors, you’ll see the biggest differences in your floor at the earliest stages of the sanding process. After the old finish and dirt are gone, you won’t notice as many differences in your floor while sanding. This doesn’t mean sanding is done, however. It’s important to continue sanding your floor until the whole surface has been treated. You don’t want the floor to be uneven in the end as a result of missing a few spots beneath the old finish.
Not Replacing Your Sandpaper Frequently Enough
This is a mistake that can happen when people have less experience sanding floors, or they want to save money by not buying as much sandpaper for their sanding project. The problem is that sandpaper gets clogged with dirt as you use it. This makes using the same sheet of sandpaper less efficient the longer you use it. When getting hardwood floor sanding done, it’s important to replace your sandpaper frequently so that you can sand your floors more quickly and effectively.
