Hardwood floors make a great addition to your home. They are easy to clean and take care of, are long lasting, and aesthetically pleasing to the eye. However, if you don’t carefully maintain and clean your hardwood flooring, you can find that the floors slowly become worn or scratched and lose some of their luster. With these tips for maintaining your hardwood flooring, it should last longer and maintain its aesthetic value!
- Use felt protector pads on your furniture. This is especially important for heavy furniture or things that you move a lot (i.e. chairs and tables). The felt protectors on the bottom will help prevent scratches from marring your hardwoods.
- Place floor mats and rugs anywhere that there is a chance of dirt or water getting on the floor on a regular basis. Keeping these mats at entrances to doorways and in the kitchen is the best way to prevent debris or water from staining and discoloring your floors. Note: When you buy mats, make sure that they are specifically made for hardwoods so you don’t end up scratching or ruining them with the wrong types of mats.
- Re-coat the floor periodically. Sometimes you just need to sand the floor down and start over. If cleaning your floors isn’t restoring the shine or luster that it used to, it’s time to refinish them. While you can do this yourself, many times it best to hire someone with the know how to come in and maintain your hardwoods so that you don’t accidentally make the problem worse.
- Clean your floors regularly. Don’t sweat it if you’ve never learned how to properly clean your hardwoods. We have a blog that will tell you exactly how to clean the floors to keep them looking and feeling like new.
Make your hardwoods last longer by taking the time to maintain them. It will save you time and money in the long run, and will also help you to maintain a beautiful home!
