How to Deal with Squeaky Floors

If you have squeaky floors, then you know how annoying they can be.

If you have squeaky floors, then you know how annoying they can be. Fixing them doesn’t need to be a hassle though! With help from the best professionals in the industry, there are some solutions you can put into practice without too much trouble. Let’s find how to deal with squeaky floors and what some of your options are

Why Do They Squeak?

Let’s start by looking at some of the reasons why your floors might squeak in the first place. The squeakiness is caused by dryness in the air. This happens most commonly during the wintertime, but it can happen at any time of year. When floors dry out they tend to expand and contract, and this attribute only serves to make things worse. The humidity outside goes up during spring and summer, and it’s only a matter of time until that moisture affects the furnishings, such as wood furniture and floors, inside your home as well. If your floors are still squeaking during this time of year, then winter dryness wasn’t the source of the issue.

What’s Wrong with the Joists?

Now let’s continue by examining the joists of your hardwood. The joists can contribute to squeaky floors as well. Unfortunately, finding out what is wrong with them is a bit more complicated. You need to go into the basement to see what is up; the alternative is to go into the room underneath where the squeaky floors are – it depends on the level of your home where the floors can be found. Surprisingly enough, fixing a loose joist is easy enough to do on your own. All you need is a kit that lets you drill through the floor and find where the joists are placed. At this point, you might notice that a loose joist is a culprit.

What’s Wrong with the Subfloors?

If nothing is wrong with the joists, then there could be a problem with the subfloors. The subfloor could be loose, or it wasn’t installed properly, to begin with; you will need professional assistance for this to determine the extent of the issue. Until then, you can ask a friend or family member to walk on the floor while you are below it to see what happens. If the subfloor moves, then that is why you have squeaky floors.
