If you are interested in installing hardwood floors, then there is one major factor to account for – the subfloor. In case your home’s subfloor is made of concrete, here is what you should do.
Clear the Way
Before you can get into the real work of installing hardwood floors, you’ve got to clear the way. You’ll need to begin by removing the existing floors. You’ll also need to remove your baseboards; taking the baseboards out of the room will guarantee you won’t make any mistakes in leaving gaps behind. Also, if the boards are still intact when you’re done, you can use them to complement your new set of hardwood floors. If your goal is to match new hardwood with older hardwood, you’re in luck. With some paint stain, you can make the boards resemble both sets of hardwood.
Watch out for any extra paint on the concrete. You’ll need a grinder to get rid of this excess paint, which means you’ll need an additional piece of equipment, plus goggles and masks, to take care of it properly. Inhaling dust from the concrete or letting it get in your eyes won’t just be unpleasant, but it’ll slow you down too.
Set Moisture Barriers
Even though winter is cold and dry, you might be using a humidifier to make your home more comfortable. However, you’ll need to protect your new hardwood floors from moisture infiltration during the installation process. Moisture barriers can help you with this task. Keep all windows and doors open so you can ventilate the room over the next day or so since the barriers will need a full twenty-four hour period to finish setting.
Prepare Your Hardwood Floors
Once the barriers are ready, it’s time to get started. However, the steps to securely installing hardwood floors will differ, depending on which type you have selected.
Floating: Floating boards will snap together without the need for any adhesive substances. Before you get started though, you’ll need to measure the room. Adding a layer of foam between the boards and subfloor can help reduce noise.
Standard: Standard floorboards, however, will need adhesive to keep them together. Go to the back of the room and move toward the front as you lay down the boards. Use small amounts of adhesive at a time, so you don’t run out too early.
