First of all, taking the baseboard off before you install hardwood floors can help improve the overall look once you have completed your tasks. Thus, you can make your floors look even more beautiful without needing the techniques of shoe molding or quarter round. That said, when you have baseboards that are larger, you may still need to use shoe molding to help the replaced baseboard fit in with the new hardwood flooring and the rest of the room.
Alternatively, one of the reasons you updated your hardwood floors was that you noticed the baseboards seemed out of alignment. If it’s too low, you will need to fix it yourself.
Tools You Need
Now that you’ve decided to take the baseboards off, you’re going to need a few tools. All of these should be easy to find if you don’t already have them.
- Pry bar
- All-purpose knife
- Hammer and nails
- Pliers
- Some wood
Now that you know why you should think about removing your baseboards and what tools you need to have, the last step is finding out how you’re supposed to do this.
How to Do It
The first thing you need to do is use the knife to cut through any caulk on your baseboard. This caulk is what secures the baseboard to your walls. Make a big enough opening for you to fit the pry bar into the hole, and then use the pry bar to start pulling. Don’t forget to slide that extra piece of wood into the gap, since you can use it as a shield between the bar and your home’s wall. Keep tugging until you feel the baseboard start to give way. If you come across a nail, you will need to slow down and proceed with caution. Keep going, but do so slowly to avoid any lasting damage to the molding that is still intact. The pliers can help you extract the baseboard once it has come loose enough for you to pull it off.
