It’s Not a Drag Race
When you start moving your furniture around, don’t drag them along your hardwood floors. If you push or pull your furniture around, it can dent the surface of your hardwood flooring. The finish will rub off, leaving the floor unprotected against physical damages. You might just have to pick up the furniture to move it more easily – so don’t go it alone! Instead, call on a friend or family member to help you.
Keep It Rolling with Wheels
If you can get furniture with wheels, it will be much easier to move said furniture around when necessary. Once you do have wheeled furniture, make sure the wheels don’t leave marks on your floor either. You should choose rubber wheels or ball wheels, two soft choices that won’t damage your floor either.
It’s a Rug Life
You might need to consider using carpets or area rugs around your furniture. First of all, rugs and carpets can help improve the longevity of your floors. Second, any furniture that is kept on rugs won’t scratch the hardwood flooring, either. Third, you’ll have a greater variety of choices to customize the look of the room – try matching the rug to the other furnishings. And if you’re feeling industrious, you could also put rug pads underneath the rugs to help hold them in place.
Padding Prevents Furniture Damage
Speaking of rug pads, you could also use padding on your furniture. Put these pads on the bottoms of furniture feet. There are several kinds of pads to think about using, each with different benefits:
- Tap-on nails: Use tacks or hollow nails for these pads. They work best for larger pieces of furniture, such as dining tables or sofas, that you don’t have to move all that often.
- Slip-on pads: These are made of rubber or plastic. Although easy to slide on, make sure they fit so they don’t come right off.
- Peel and stick: These pads are the least expensive option. They’re made of felt and attach directly to the bottoms of the furniture’s feet. Choose thick peel and stick pads – thinner ones will fall off too quickly.
