While the hard work may seem over when your hardwood flooring is installed, if you don’t properly care for it, your floors will eventually fade and lose the luster they once had. How can you stop the sun from ruining your investment? Here are five ways to stop the fading.
Turn the Seat Around
Every three to four months, or once a season, you should move around your rugs and change up your furniture placement. You don’t have to move everything out and start looking for a new dining room table; just move around the key pieces so that places previously covered up can be exposed to the sun.
Have it Made in the Shade
Just like you can develop sunburn from a walk in the park without sunscreen, your hardwood floor can develop fading from overexposure to the fun. Add drapes or curtains to your bigger windows or add bushes or hedges in front of your windows to help offset the sear of the sun.
You Won’t Regret a Refinish
Don’t wait until your floor is already damaged to fix it. Take steps to prevent sun or water damage by paying attention to your hardwood flooring. Refinish your flood floors regularly to make sure they’ll be around for years to come (and avoid costly repairs later down the road). It isn’t necessary to refinish your living room hardwood floors as regularly, as refinishing is a big undertaking with different pros and cons. If you only have slight fading or light surface scratches, screening may be a better option.
Redesign Your Lights
Consider redesigning your lighting in rooms with hardwood flooring. Instead of subjecting your floors to harsh direct sunlight, consider adding windows with UV-shielding capabilities or install skylights to add beautiful natural lighting without severe sun damage.
