Refinishing Hardwood Floors: Should You Really Do It By Yourself?

refinishing hardwood floors

In this blog, we’ll help you answer these questions about refinishing hardwood floors, and more!

When it comes to refinishing hardwood floors, there are two answers to this question. The first, shorter answer is no, not really. The second, longer answer is to take a long look at yourself in the mirror. How good are you at do-it-yourself tasks? Even more importantly, can your floor even handle refinishing? In this blog, we’ll help you answer these questions about refinishing hardwood floors, and more!

Are You Refinishing Hardwood Floors? How Good Are You?

While commercial stores may rent you tools and equipment for sanding and refinishing hardwood floors, first consider your own skills. How good are you? Attempting the tasks that go into refinishing, such as sanding and staining, aren’t all that easy.

For instance, a floor sander can be heavy, at least 100 pounds. It also doesn’t cooperate when you try to move it. These floor sanders make a lot of noise. You might also want to keep in mind that multiple coats of staining and finishing are needed for a noticeable difference. If going through the process once is exhausting enough, imagine doing it at least three more times.

Refinishing Hardwood Floors? Can You Floor Handle It?

You will want to be sure that your hardwood floor can even be refinished in the first place. Can your floor handle it? If you’re attempting to refinish a laminate floor, you might just end up destroying it. After all, they aren’t made of wood. Engineered hardwood, doesn’t cope with refinishing well, either. Instead, you could always consider re-sealing or buffing engineered hardwood floors. Refinishing hardwood floors only really works when you have traditional, natural hardwood.

Some Helpful Tips for Refinishing Hardwood Floors By Yourself

If you are brave enough to tackle this on your own (although we heartily recommend professional assistance) then you should follow some of these helpful tips, such as:

  • Get a demonstration first: If you want to know how to best operate the sander you’re renting, get a demonstration of how to use it, first.
  • Skip the staining step: Leave your precious wood as au natural, and then go back later using what is known as a “water-based polyurethane” and finish the job then.
  • Go slowly: Taking your time is a crucial part of the process. It can be time-consuming, and difficult to know when everything is done and dry.
