There are many good reasons why you would need to clean your hardwood floors. For instance, let’s say you’re not careful and you track mud inside after getting some late-season yard work done. Or your cat slinks around with litter box sand stuck to its little paws and its seeping into the underlayment. Steam cleaning might not be the answer to all of your problems.
Problems Caused by Steam
Steam cleaning your hardwood floors may not solve all of your maintenance problems. It can make any small problems worse. That’s because there’s still plenty of moisture in the steam, even if there is nothing liquid left. If you need to reseal or refinish the wood on your floors, this moisture exposure can become a structural issue. Eventually, your floors will start to crack, warp, buckle, and bend. You don’t want this to happen, especially during your next holiday shindig. You’re much better off staying away from this method.
Suggestions for Cleaning
While steam cleaning may be effective for rugs and carpets, it’s not the best idea to use it on your wood floors. It doesn’t matter if your floors are natural or engineered because you do have other options when it comes to keeping it clean. For instance, you can decide to sweep them instead. However, when you do this, choose brooms with softer bristles so they don’t leave behind scratches that you can’t easily see. You can also try vacuuming the floor, too, especially if there are small bits of debris such as crumbs or pieces of dog food that have been left on the floor. One last recourse is to use a microfiber dust mop. One of the biggest reasons to try the dust mop is that it can collect allergens and get them off of your wood floors. With cold and flu season in full swing, you don’t need another way to get sick inside your home.
It’s Your Decision
Cleaning your floors comes down to what you can afford in terms of time and money. So with that in mind, it’s your decision how you want to approach it. No matter what you decide to do, however, you’ve got to make sure that your hardwood floor looks as good five years from now as it did when it was first installed five weeks ago.
