The Pine Tree
Pine is a relatively affordable type of wood. Although it may surprise you, it technically isn’t an actual form of hardwood. However, several types of pine have proven to be just as resilient as true hardwood is. You will find pine trees in some form all over the northern hemisphere of the planet. When you think of a pine tree, though, you’re probably thinking of southern yellow pine. Pines trees can live for astonishingly long times from 100 years to over 1,000. A Bristlecone pine called Methuselah has been around for more than 4,600 years!
Southern Yellow Pine
The southern yellow pine, is as its name implies, yellow. It will be light yellow at heart and a pale yellow when you examine the sapwood. Unfortunately, southern yellow pine wood used for flooring isn’t as hard as red oak hardwood flooring is. That said, it is more stable than red oak and consequently, is still appropriate for areas where you can expect mild wear and tear – the dining room, just not the kitchen.
Heart Pine
Heart pine comes from the heart of the pine tree. It’s much darker and will feature sap stains. Although it is yellow when it is first cut, given enough time, it will start to turn red. The grains of heart pine feature swirls and banding effects, which make them even more eye-catching. Whether you have a home that is decades old, or you are thinking about building a new custom home, you can consider this type of wood for the floors. It feels warm and is an elegant touch that engineered wood might not be able to offer. If you love hardwood floors, then pine might be right wood for you.
