Yin and Yang: The Light and Dark of Hardwood Floors

Yin and Yang: The Light and Dark of Hardwood Floors

You might not have the budget to redo the floors if you are unhappy with the results. So it comes down to whether or not you are in the market for lighter-colored hardwood floors or their darker counterparts.

Finding new hardwood flooring can be a time-consuming process. After all, you want to make sure you get it right. Once the flooring is in, you’ll have to live with it for at least the next decade. You might not have the budget to redo the floors if you are unhappy with the results. So it comes down to whether or not you are in the market for lighter-colored hardwood floors or their darker counterparts.

Cleaning Frequency

First of all, you need to be honest with yourself about how often you clean your home. A clean home is a healthier place to live. You’ll be much happier when you strive to keep your floors clean. Black hardwood will show all of the dust that has accumulated. If it disturbs you, then it is bound to bother any of your visitors who come to stay this summer. Instead of going for full-on black floors, choose a shade lighter. It lends the classy feel you desire without forcing your hand to clean every single day. After all, no one has the time or energy for that. White oak hardwood flooring will show less wear and tear. Depending on the amount of foot traffic in your home, this could be your best bet.

The Presence of Pets

Secondly, think about the habits of your pets. Your pets could be adorable and mischievous. They calm you down and help you feel better when you are stressed out. But like humans, they have some bad habits that are detrimental to the condition of home’s hardwood floors. Scratches show up more clearly on darker hardwood floors. Be sure to trim the claws on your dog’s paws short. Just don’t do it to your cats.

Meanwhile, you will want to reconsider the build of your hardwood floors. If they are solid, then you are in good shape. This is because solid floors are more durable than engineered floors. Look for floors that score high on the Janka hardness scale.

The Size of Your Home

Finally, take a moment to consider the dimensions of your home. Apartments and condos will look different than a townhouse or single-family homes. Those structures, will in turn, either be cozier or will be a miniature mansion. It all depends on the subdivision in which you live. Darker floors make rooms feel smaller, while lighter hardwood floors can open up a small space.
